I love Soul Coughing

There, I said it. Yuval Gabay’s drumming with Soul Coughing kinda changed the way I thought about the drums. In the same way that Siggi Baldursson from The Sugarcubes did. Both of these guys were great at composing PARTS that were integral to the songs they were in. Coming from a jazz background, this was new to me…I was much more of an improvisational player and would usually just go with the flow, keep the groove, and keep my head down until it was time to SOLO (blech!). I still do that for the most part I guess…it’s usually best to stay out of the way of the song, but sometimes you can get in there and make your presence known a bit more, and that’s what I’m working on today at the studio.
